Why "Aging Is a Disease" Changes Everything About How We Think About Health
Most people think aging is something that simply happens to us.
You get older, your energy drops, your recovery slows, and your body starts to break down. It feels inevitable.
But what if that assumption is wrong?
On a recent episode of The Superhuman Blueprint Podcast, host Drew Pierson sat down with physician, TEDx speaker, and author Dr. Sofia Din to discuss a controversial idea: aging is a disease. Rather than viewing age-related decline as something we must accept, Dr. Din argues that many of the changes we associate with aging can be recognized, addressed, and in some cases slowed long before they become serious problems.
The conversation centered on a simple but powerful distinction. There is a difference between aging helplessly and aging with agency.
For Dr. Din, the goal is not simply extending lifespan. It is protecting healthspan, the years of life spent healthy, active, and capable.
Why Aging Is a Disease Is More Than a Debate
One of the most interesting ideas from the episode is the concept of biological "pauses."
According to Dr. Din, many people experience major shifts in their bodies during midlife.
Hormones change. Metabolism slows. Sleep becomes less restorative. Recovery takes longer. These shifts often begin years before people recognize what is happening.
The problem is that many of these symptoms are dismissed as normal aging.
That mindset comes with a hidden cost.
When people assume declining energy, poor sleep, weight gain, or hormonal changes are unavoidable, they may miss opportunities for early intervention. By the time serious disease appears, the underlying issues may have been developing for years.
This is where preventative health, hormone health, and modern longevity medicine become important. The focus shifts from reacting to disease to identifying changes before they lead to larger problems.
A Better Way to Think About Healthy Aging
Dr. Din suggests paying attention to the small signals your body sends long before major health problems appear.
That means tracking changes in energy, sleep quality, strength, recovery, mood, and overall resilience. These indicators often reveal more about your future health than your age on a calendar.
The goal is not to chase youth forever.
The goal is healthy aging. It is preserving function, independence, and quality of life for as long as possible.
The biggest takeaway from this episode is simple. If aging is a disease, then decline is not something we should automatically accept. The earlier we recognize the signs of change, the more opportunities we have to shape how we age.
